The Sound Of Music: An Original Soundtrack Recording (1965 Film – 30th Anniversary Edition) Specifications
Rodgers & Hammerstein wrote the music for this film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The scene in which Andrews crests a hill with her arms spread singing the title track is one of the greatest in American film. Hearing that song forever fills the listener with that image, and remains as fresh and even chilling as it was initially. Unfortunately much of this has been co-opted by television advertisements or whatever, and so could languish because of the clichéd quality of it. Fortunately, conductor Irwin Kostal delivered a wonderful score, and the vocal delivery is as vibrant as any in the storied history of film musicals. –Scott Wilson

Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit – Songs From The Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview
Whoopi Goldberg has a lot of talents, but singing is not one of them. Hearing her massacre Motown classics like “Dancing in the Street,” “Ball of Confusion” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” in her flat, dull voice on this soundtrack album would be harmless if a whole generation weren’t being introduced to these songs through her clumsy performances. Several choirs turn in lackluster performances of gospel numbers. The disc’s one redeeming moment is Aretha Franklin’s overpowering delivery of “A Deeper Love,” written and produced by C+C Music Factory. –Geoffrey Himes

The Full Monty: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack Specifications
The soundtrack to the best movie ever made about strippers nods to the second-best, with a new version of Irene Cara’s theme song from Flashdance, and to another famous cinematic striptease, with Tom Jones’s cover of “You Can Leave Your Hat On.” The bulk of the score, though, consists of songs that are more or less real-world stripper classics. It’s hard to hear Hot Chocolate full blast and not bump and grind at least a little. Trivia note: Anne Dudley, who wrote the movie’s incidental music (two pieces are included here), used to be in the Art of Noise. –Douglas Wolk
